"Loi Chatel" in Switzerland: the misunderstanding to know
Many policyholders look for the "Loi Chatel" to cancel in Switzerland. But it is a French mechanism on the tacit renewal of contracts: it has no direct equivalent in Swiss law. Here is what actually applies on this side of the border.
A French mechanism, not a Swiss one
In France, the Loi Chatel requires the insurer to inform the policyholder of the option not to renew the contract. In Switzerland this specific mechanism does not exist: it is the ICA that governs renewal and cancellation.
What actually applies in Switzerland
In Switzerland, what matters is the notice period (often three months before renewal for ICA lines), the renewal date of your policy, and the extraordinary rights (claim, premium increase). For basic insurance, the KVG and the 30 November date apply.
