Cancelling KVG basic insurance: 30 November
Basic insurance is governed by the Health Insurance Act (KVG) and follows its own rules, different from ICA insurance. The key reference is 30 November, to be met in order to switch insurer on 1 January. No figures are invented here: the ranges cited are set by federal law.
The 30 November deadline
To switch basic insurer on 1 January, your cancellation must reach your current insurer by 30 November at the latest. Once that deadline passes, the contract is renewed for the following year.
As with any cancellation, keep proof of receipt: registered mail is the safest option.
Deductibles and co-payment: the legal ranges
For adults, the annual deductible of basic insurance falls within a legal range from 300 to 2500 CHF. Above the deductible, you pay a co-payment of 10% of costs, capped at 700 CHF per year for adults (and 350 CHF for children).
Choosing a higher deductible lowers the premium but increases your share when you need care: this choice depends on your health situation.
