Cancelling your car insurance in Switzerland
Car insurance covers several distinct lines: motor liability (compulsory), partial casco and fully comprehensive (optional). Each has its own cancellation rules. Distinguishing them clearly avoids leaving contracts running unnecessarily.
Motor liability: the compulsory insurance
Motor liability is compulsory for every vehicle registered in Switzerland. You cannot simply cancel it without having replacement cover in place — the vehicle registration office (MFK) checks the existence of cover on any change of owner or plates.
For cancellation at the ordinary renewal date, the letter must be received by your insurer at least three months before the annual renewal date (shown on your policy). In the event of a premium increase or claim, the extraordinary right of cancellation applies.
Partial casco and fully comprehensive
Partial casco (theft, broken glass, natural events) and fully comprehensive (all risks) are property insurance policies subject to the ICA. Ordinary cancellation follows your general conditions: usually three months before the annual renewal date.
These policies end automatically when the vehicle is sold. Notify your insurer as soon as the sale takes place to stop premiums and obtain a pro-rata refund of premiums paid in advance. A bill of sale is generally sufficient.
